Manuscript Types

The SWS Scholarly Society Vienna welcomes a diverse range of manuscript types for submission to Earth & Planetary Insights (EPI). Our aim is to provide a comprehensive platform for diverse forms of scholarly work that contribute uniquely to the academic discourse on sustainability, Earth, and planetary sciences. Below is a detailed overview of the types of manuscripts we accept:

1. Original Research Articles present groundbreaking findings that significantly contribute to the field of Earth and planetary sciences. These manuscripts provide a comprehensive and detailed account of the research question, methodology, results, and interpretation. Submissions must demonstrate originality, scientific rigor, and alignment with the journal’s scope. Emphasis is placed on innovative approaches, robust methodologies, and meaningful conclusions that advance knowledge and address global challenges.

Examples of Topics:

  • Advances in Seismic Imaging for Deep Earth Exploration
  • New Techniques for Sustainable Mining and Resource Extraction
  • Application of Isotope Geochemistry in Hydrocarbon Exploration

2. Review Articles offer a critical and comprehensive synthesis of existing knowledge on a specific topic or field within Earth and planetary sciences. These manuscripts consolidate past research, identify key trends, and highlight gaps in the current literature. Review articles are expected to provide valuable insights, propose future research directions, and serve as a vital resource for both novice and experienced researchers. Their purpose is to offer a well-rounded perspective on evolving scientific debates and emerging areas of interest.

Examples of Topics:

  • A Comprehensive Review of Geospatial Technologies in Environmental Monitoring
  • Recent Advances in Geochronology: Techniques and Applications
  • Machine Learning in Geophysics: Current Trends and Future Directions

3. Short Communications are concise reports of preliminary findings or significant advancements that warrant rapid dissemination. These manuscripts are shorter than full research articles and focus on new ideas, innovative methods, or novel findings that are of immediate interest to the field.

Examples of Topics:

  • Preliminary Findings on the Use of AI for Predicting Volcanic Eruptions
  • Rapid Assessment of Groundwater Quality Using Portable Spectrometry Tools
  • First Results on Using Geothermal Gradient Data for Regional Energy Assessments

4. Case Studies provide in-depth examinations of specific instances, phenomena, or practices within real-world contexts. These manuscripts highlight unique, illustrative, or exemplary cases that offer valuable insights, lessons, and implications for broader application. Case studies are particularly valuable in fields where practical, context-driven examples significantly inform theory, practice, and policy. They serve as a bridge between theoretical research and real-world application, providing critical insights for researchers, educators, and practitioners alike.

Examples of Topics:

  • Case Study of Mineral Exploration Techniques in Arctic Environments
  • Landslide Hazard Mapping in Mountainous Regions: A Case from the Himalayas
  • Successful Implementation of Remote Sensing for Coastal Erosion Management

5. Methodological Articles present new methods, techniques, or protocols that advance the field of Earth and planetary sciences. These manuscripts provide a comprehensive explanation of the method, including its development, validation, and potential applications. Methodological articles are essential for disseminating innovative approaches that enhance research practices, improve reproducibility, and facilitate technological advancement. Submissions should offer clear, step-by-step guidance, supported by evidence of the method's reliability, efficiency, and relevance to current and emerging research challenges.

Examples of Topics:

  • A Novel Method for 3D Geological Mapping Using UAV and Photogrammetry
  • Development of a Low-Cost Sensor Array for Real-Time Air Quality Monitoring
  • An Automated Workflow for Mineral Identification Using Hyperspectral Imaging

6. Editorials are written by the journal’s editors or invited experts and provide authoritative commentary on the journal’s content, emerging trends, or significant developments in Earth and planetary sciences. These manuscripts offer insights into the editorial perspective, highlight key issues of relevance to the scientific community, and address important topics impacting research, policy, and practice. Editorials may introduce special issues, reflect on scientific advancements, or call attention to urgent challenges that require collective scholarly action.

Examples of Topics:

  • The Role of Geosciences in Achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
  • Innovations in Planetary Exploration: The Next Frontier in Space Research
